A review of The Crocodile Cafe show in Seattle, WA on Sept. 30, 2007
By Byron Prather

It was a rainy night in Seattle outside the Crocodile Cafe. Inside, the low-lit venue was a warm welcome from the harsh outer elements. What was even more welcoming was the smoky, soft, silky voice of Maria Taylor. I had never seen Maria so I did not know what to expect. I was pleasantly surprised by what I saw and heard.

I’ve always had a soft spot in my heart for left handed guitarists. Maria plays the traditional hollow body that is the perfect marriage of her sound and style. As I stood with my fellow concert goers I couldn’t help but notice something unusual in the air. Silence. Maria had captured the attention of everyone in attendance and we were hanging on her every note. What struck me as even more unusual was that we were not watching her in a much bigger venue. Maria has the presence and ability to carry her to much greater heights.

Maria wasn’t the only one performing at her peek this evening. Her band has the ability to stay with her for her every ebb and flow. So often you see artists that only do well with fast songs or slow songs or intense songs. Maria and her band do well with all of these. They closed out her set with a few slow songs that had all of us mesmerized. As she ended the evening with "Song Beneath the Song" from 11:11 I was thinking one thing; I can’t wait for her to come back to town.
